How to Light a Video Podcast So It Looks Professional
By David Parra · Dull Light Productions · Updated October 6, 2026
Use one soft main light in front of each person, slightly to the side and above eye level, then add a gentler fill light to soften shadows. Light the background separately so people do not blend into it. Avoid mixing window light with room lights, and keep it the same every session.
Start with one soft main light
The biggest change you can make is a single soft light placed in front of the face, a little off to one side and just above eye level. Soft light, which comes from a large or diffused source, is kind to skin and avoids harsh shadows. A bare, small light makes people look tired. If you only change one thing in your setup, make it this one.
Add a fill and separate the background
A second, dimmer light from the other side softens the shadows left by the main light. Then think about the background: if the wall is as bright as the person, they blend into it. A small light behind and to the side, or lit objects in the background, creates depth and makes the frame look intentional. Many successful shows are simply two or three well-placed lights.
Do not mix light sources
Windows, ceiling lights and studio lights often have different color temperatures, which makes skin look inconsistent from one side of the face to the other. Close the blinds, turn off the room lights and rely on lights you control. Consistency matters just as much: if you record in the same place every week, mark where the lights go so the look matches from episode to episode.
Let a studio set it up for you
Lighting is one of the first things a professional studio takes off your plate. A purpose-built space already has lights placed for multi-camera filming, and a team that knows how to adjust them for different guests. Dull Light Productions films video podcasts in South Florida, and you can ask the team how your show would look before you commit to buying equipment.
Frequently asked questions
How do you light a video podcast so it looks professional?
Use one soft main light in front of each person, add a gentler fill light, light the background separately for depth, and avoid mixing window light with room lights.
How many lights do I need for a video podcast?
Two or three well-placed lights are enough for most shows: a main light, a fill and a background light for separation.
Can I use natural window light?
It can look good, but it changes through the day and clashes with room lights. For consistent episodes, controlled studio lights are more reliable.
Is there a studio in Miami that can light my video podcast?
Yes. Dull Light Productions films video podcasts in South Florida in a space set up for multi-camera recording and lighting.
