How to Prepare for a Podcast Interview as a Guest
By David Parra · Dull Light Productions · Updated September 28, 2026
Listen to a few episodes of the show, ask the host what the conversation will cover and choose three stories or points you want to share. Test your microphone and internet if you are remote, find a quiet room, and speak naturally instead of reading from a script.
Get to know the show
Listen to at least a few episodes before you record. Notice the tone, whether the host jokes or keeps it serious, how long the answers run and how the conversation flows. This tells you how to pitch your own stories. It also helps you refer to earlier episodes naturally, which hosts appreciate.
Ask the host what to expect
Message the host or producer and ask a few simple things: the format, the rough length, whether it is audio or video, and whether they can share the main questions. Ask how the episode will be promoted and what they need from you, such as a short bio and a headshot. Clear answers remove most pre-interview nerves.
Choose your talking points
Pick three ideas or short stories you would like listeners to remember. Real examples from your own work or life are more engaging than general advice. Write them as bullet points, not sentences. Notes keep you on track, but reading a script word for word tends to sound flat.
Set up your sound and space
If you record remotely, use a quiet room with soft furnishings, which cuts echo. Wear headphones to avoid feedback, use an external microphone if you have one, and test your internet and software ahead of time. Close other apps and silence notifications. If you are recording in person at a studio, arrive a little early to settle in.
Practice, then relax
Do a short mock answer out loud and listen back for pace and filler words. On the day, take a breath before each answer and speak as if you were talking to one friend. Mistakes are normal and can be edited out. Afterward, thank the host and share the episode with your own audience when it goes live.
Frequently asked questions
How do you prepare for a podcast interview as a guest?
Research the show, ask the host what the conversation covers, pick three main points, test your audio and find a quiet space. Then talk naturally instead of reading.
Should I ask for the questions in advance?
It is perfectly fine to ask. Many hosts share a general outline, even if they do not share every question.
What if I make a mistake during the recording?
Pause and restate your point. Most podcasts are edited, so small mistakes disappear before the episode is released.
Can I be a podcast guest in Miami in person?
Yes. Many Miami and South Florida shows record in a studio, which gives you professional sound without needing your own equipment. Ask the host where the session will take place and how to get there.
